Android SDK Hardware Requirements

Hey everyone,

Over the last couple of months, we've gotten lots of applications and feature requests for the Android SDK private alpha – thanks for all your feedback so far! At this stage in development, we're really focused on the core hardware and platforms that will take us forward. This means that developers will need to meet the SDK's current hardware requirement in order to gain access to the alpha.

Right now, the SDK requires devices with Snapdragon 800+ processors. This includes the Note 4 (Gear VR), Nexus 5, and Nexus 6. You can find a full list of supported devices on Qualcomm's website:

Snapdragon 800 Snapdragon 801 Snapdragon 805 Snapdragon 808 Snapdragon 810

This isn't the final word on our hardware roadmap – just where we are right now. While we can only accept new developers who have compatible hardware, we love hearing from everyone interested in Android development. Even if you don’t have the necessary hardware, be sure to apply, and we’ll notify you as soon as the public developer beta becomes available.

Finally, it’s important to note that the alpha isn’t ready for public demos or presentations, such as hackathons or work published on the web. However, we do encourage personal projects, academic research, and other private applications until we hit public beta.

Thanks,The Leap Motion team

Update: The supported hardware list previously didn't include Snapdragon 801 and 808 devices. This has been corrected.

Update 2: Following up on the successful release of our Orion beta for Windows, we're working on the next big step -- bringing it to Android!

We're in the process of completely overhauling our existing private alpha Android SDK, which is built on our older V2 software. This is a massive step forward, and it's possible that the mobile hardware requirements may shift on our way towards beta.

Things are changing fast and we want to provide the best support possible. With that in mind, we've decided to temporarily close applications to the alpha until we can provide a more solid foundation for development. Developers who already have access to the SDK can continue prototyping ahead of the Orion release.

By signing up on our form, you’ll find out the moment that the Android SDK is ready. We're excited by the enormous potential of mobile VR, and can't wait to share the tools you'll need to bring your projects to life.
